[...] Melbourne—This sparkly city reminded me much of my hometown of Chicago. It’s full of great neighborhoods with lots of ethnic eateries, great modern architecture, and helpful bike lanes criss-crossing through it. My favorite part had to be all the little back-street ‘lanes’ (read: alleys) that were turned into hip cafe-filled streets and nighttime destinations. Thanks mate! [...]

Hi Lisa --
hope you are enjoying Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef. You left Melbourne just in time. It has been around 100 degrees this weekend, and unfortunately, I can't complain to the people back in the U.S. since they've been having the snow storms. Sigh. Next weekend will be their Latin Film Festival and so I am gearing up for my documentaries. There's even a Spanish Film Fest. Time to brush up on my Spanish (I wish, hola is about the extent of my Spanish). Have fun snorkeling and it was really nice having you here in Melbourne so that you can share my dismay of the prevalence of skinny jeans.

Great picture of the sculpture that looks like a round spine with the blue, gold cups. Colors work well with the dark grey sky.
Looks like a cool city.
Great that you rented a bike, flat terrain just like in Chicago.

Fascinating update on the not so rich, not so famous and not the least bit concerned. "A veritable melting pot...." Please dumb down your column a bit for me to continue understand it. The city of Melbourne should hire you to write its next tourism brochure or even a real estate brochure for local relocation for the Aussies. Even I want to move there now and work in a coffee shop and ride my bike everywhere. On second thought, forget about the bike part!
Sweaty Anna K.? Great visual, no picture required. It's still below 0 here with several inches of snow on the ground. Go for a swim and think about your northern hemisphere, second city buddies.
