Loved these tips. Especially agree with "don't hail a taxi". Backpacking around Europe, I didn't get a taxi once - only public transport or my two feet. Sure, I spent lots of time lost, but my trip (and my wallet!!) was better for it.

Great blog. Also a great recipe for travelling with a good attitude. One important addition - pack your adaptability, flexibility and tolerance and carry it with you! One slight difference - carry enough cash in some popular currency for a couple of days of living in case the ATM doesn't work for you. Cash will always get you out of a problem and has saved me on more than one occasion.

Pretty good advice...except for the "don't look for the nearest McDonald's". Over the years, I've visited McDonald's in, well...I can't even count how many countries anymore! It's always a great experience! I love seeing the menu differences, and listening/watching the locals. They're comfortable there and I've generally gotten a good idea of how they may feel about "all things American" creeping into the country. Visit McDonald's for the experience and the culture---just order a Coke. But for REAL food....nothing beats street vendors!!

Nice blog about a topic close to my heart - traveling! I saw your article in the Boston Globe today about "voluntourism." Nifty concept, and you certainly provided a WIDE range of options. Apparently there's been a trend lately of high school students going on volunteer trips simply to have an experience for a college essay. I thought the idea was that you have experiences, and then write about them... but now I suppose the need to write has inspired some to have experiences.

I agree with the camera advice...

I was in NYC's Battery Park the other day, and there's only so many photos you can take before you realize there are some things a photo won't capture.
