Medellin is becoming one of Colombia’s largest cities. After once being known as one of the most dangerous cities in the world, it has become much safer since the 1993 death of Cocaine King, Pablo Escobar. Up in the mountains that surround Medellin in every direction, some violence and gang wars still play out, but down in the valley there are some peaceful parks and green spaces amidst some congested street chaos, noise, and grime.
Enjoy this photo essay (it’s free…why not enjoy it?) to give you a feel for Medellin as I saw it.

I got really really sick in Medellin… and then I was mad because they didn’t have an apple charger for my laptop at ANY appleish stores in all of Medellin. So I pretty much missed everything there!

I love the angle you took in Parque de las Luces (“Light Park”) — the first photo. I’ve taken a few photos from a distance, but none have turned out well. I need to go down there on a nice day and play around some more!

Thanks everyone! Dave…sorry i missed you there. Yeah it was such a cool sight. I only wished I went back at night…but, frankly I didn’t feel okay alone taking photos. I was warned enough in broad daylight to be careful.

Great Pics Lisa! I've been here in Medellin for the last 2 months and I can't get any of mine to turn out like that. It might be time to put the Aguadiente down.

@Gareth – gracias amigo! …and I barely scratched the surface! So much to see. Have you been to the botanic garden yet? It’s a great oasis in the city.

@Gareth – Hola! That pic (like most of the vistas) is @ Cerro Nutibara on top of the hill.

Nice pics. I was born in Medellín but grew up in the States during my teens/twenties and then came back for what I THOUGHT was going to be a 2 month vacation (I never left)..
The folks were right to give you heads up on being careful with the camera. I have a G11 and even that is a little too attention grabbing to just hang it round your neck and walk around shooting. You gotta keep it hidden and pop it out at strategic moments.. which hampers street photography, which, along w macro, is what I like. Someday I will get myself a DSLR (when I have enough moolah for one, which is one of the drawbacks of living here: it's hard to save) to indulge my photo fancy, but for now I guess the G11 is enough.. Curious.. what SLR do you use? Lenses?
I have a few (literally) pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/23199471@N03/
