July is the U.S.’s National Parks and Recreation month.  What will you be doing to get out and recreate?

And that’s reCREate…not REcreate or even procreate.

There are 58 National Parks in the United States protected by the National Park Service.  That’s a lot. I am not even sure how many I’ve seen. Maybe ten or so.  Besides seeing the world, I’ve been fortunate enough to take several road trips over the years across my own vast country to places like Yosemite National Park with my grandmother when I was a teenager, the Grand Canyon about a decade ago, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Glacier, Monument Valley, and Acadia National Park in Maine.

About six years ago, I went on a road trip across the U.S., stopping at a few National Parks along the way and reached one of our most famous in Wyoming.  Established in 1872, Yellowstone National Park is often said to be the world’s first national park.  It is more than two million acres in size (63 miles long and 54 miles wide), making it larger than the entire state of Delaware. The Continental Divide runs through the park separating the water drainage that ultimately runs into either the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean. Known for its wildlife (bears, wolves, bison, elk, moose), geothermal activity, canyons, hundreds of waterfalls, lakes, and mountains, you could be here for months and never see it all.  So my two days barely scratched the surface – which is sadly how most visitors ‘see’ the park.  But seeing some of it is better than nothing. This park is actually one big-ass caldera of a ‘super volcano’…and yes, it’s still very active.
