I can’t figure out why in English some add an “O” to the front of this city’s name calling it Oporto. I know we make some proper names into easier English words like Venice from Venezia or Germany from Deutschland, but never quite understood why we couldn’t just say Roma…or now, Porto.

Porto is the second largest city in Portugal and one of Europe’s oldest centers as it was an outpost of the Roman Empire in the 4th century. It is also world-famous for it’s namesake wine.

I spent a few days here strolling around the riverfront, plazas, and back alleys. It’s a charming easy town…except for the hills.

Porto looks so romantic. Love the pics. Make me want to stroll around town — and perhaps, enjoy a glass of port.

Oddly enough, the picture of the bridge with the wee cars reminds me of Portland, Oregon.

Are you sure it's not the Irish who refer to this lovely place as O'Porto?

That name still perplexes me!

Gorgeous photos, Lash! I've only ever heard wonderful things about Porto. You're right about the name, too – I don't know why some people add an "O" in front?! Bizzaro!

Very hilly so keep that in mind! I loved eating on the river. And strolling around the town. Nice to also go out on the bus tour and get your bearings…and see the Atlantic ocean!
