Cancun is a city that’s always highly ranked on many people’s most desired destination wish lists. Around three million visitors arrive each year to enjoy the beaches, the blissfully warm weather and the party atmosphere. However, Cancun holidays aren’t all about the white sands, and if you’re hankering for some excitement this is the ideal place. From swimming with whale sharks to cave diving to exploring ancient Mayan cities — Cancun can easily get your adrenaline pumping.
Diving in the cenotes
The Mayan Riviera is a world-famous diving location and is full of exotic marine life, coral reefs and even underwater museums. Diving in the cenotes is spectacularly thrilling. In fact, it’s cave diving of the highest order. Visibility in the underwater caves is excellent thanks to the fresh waters and diving can include the largest underwater caves in the world, the Dos Ojos, which translates to ‘two eyes’. You don’t have to be a veteran scuba diver to visit the underwater caverns. Snorkeling is another way that you can explore this magical world.
Getting up close with the whale sharks
Swimming with the whale sharks is one of the most exhilarating activities available and you can get close to these creatures from June through August. The warm Caribbean Sea waters are a glorious place to swim with the local marine life, including, of course, the lovable dolphins and sea turtles. But free-diving with the immense but peaceful whale sharks is even more of an experience, and along the way you’ll also come across manta rays. There are plenty of marine excursions from Cancun, so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to spend time in the water.
Walking across the jungle treetops
The Mayan jungle stretches for approximately 330 acres and there’s no experience quite like viewing the landscape by hanging from a zipline. You can a zipline tour, skywalk across seven aerial bridges and test your courage on a bungee swing. If you still find yourself yearning for adventure, try ATV biking through the jungle itself. Combine these with swimming in your own cenote at the end of the day and you have a much better day than just lazing at the beach.
Traveling back in time
Unleash your Indiana Jones spirit by exploring the ancient Mayan City of Chichen Itza. This is one of the most popular archaeological sites in Mexico and the Kukulkan Pyramid is classed as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. The site itself is well-preserved and includes the Temple of the Warriors, the Great Ball Court and the Sacred Cenote. Trips to the city are available from Cancun and normally allow you some time to swim in a cenote. You don’t want to forget your camera!
These are just some of the adventure activities in beautiful Cancun. If you’re constantly on the lookout for adventure, you can also try some jet-skiing and parasailing. Dragging yourself from the beach is a mean feat, but if you manage to then you’ll discover an altogether more thrilling side to this Mexican beauty spot.
