5 Professional Tips to Become a Better Photographer

You are here: Home / Guest Posts / 5 Professional Tips to Become a Better Photographer

//  by Guest Poster Leave a Comment

With the proliferation of many camera-enabled devices, almost anyone can become an amateur photographer. While it is true that a picture is worth a thousand words, some images are worth more than others. The quality of images taken usually evidences the difference between a professional and an amateur photographer. Below are professional tips that can drastically improve the standing of any photographer.

Study the Work of Other Photographers

Learning from seasoned photographers can invariably skim off thousands of hours that would have otherwise been spent doing trial and error learning. The internet has a rich collection of free stock photos available to the intrepid photographer. Accompanying other photographers and attending seminars or webinars is a great way to benchmark and acquire priceless insider techniques.

Learn Editing Skills

Unlike the olden times when a photographer had to destroy a picture if it failed to meet specific criteria, it is possible to alter a picture significantly. Computer software such as Photoshop has given photographers the ability to tinker and change their raw images. Online resources that teach Photoshop offer valuable skills such as white balancing, erasing unwanted elements from the picture, cropping, and other crucial editing techniques.

Composition and Camera Angles

LL PhotogA picture that has a story to tell will always get more positive reviews compared to an image that has been taken hastily. A photographer needs to study the subject, considering all the virtual objects featured in the shot. Camera angles help give pictures perspectives, something that connects and gives depth to pictures.

Experiment with New Techniques

You have probably seen deliberately blurred pictures or with blurred foreground or background. These creative techniques help the photographer dictate what they want to be prominent in the image. If a photographer is taking a picture of Mount Everest, she will blur the foreground. If she is taking a photo of her friend on a busy street, she can blur the background. The techniques are not necessarily taught in school but are gained on the field.

Invest in the Right Gear

lens-camera

The right gear doesn’t necessarily have to be high-end expensive cameras and lenses but rather having the basics needed for photography. Essentials are cameras, tripods, telephoto lenses, and a computer. As you continue taking pictures, you will keep acquiring knowledge about how the different accessories make it easier for you to take photos. You will purchase the essentials that you think that you require along the way.

Check out Lisa’s gear list here.

Whether you are a professional photographer or a hobbyist trying to up his/her game, paying heed to the points listed will improve your picture quality. Like any other activity, photography requires constant practice to improve and get the best out of it. As technology continues to evolve and improve, we can only predict that photography will be fundamentally different in the next couple of years. But the principles of photography will largely remain unchanged, so it is incumbent upon budding photographers to learn the fundamentals of photography.
