The Egyptian vacation hotspot of Sharm el Sheikh not only offers some of the world’s finest beaches, but also some of the most adrenaline-pumping activities. From wreck diving to quad biking through the desert to those Mount Sinai sunrises — this is an adventure lover’s paradise.
If lying around on a sun-drenched beach and taking a dip in warm, crystal clear waters is your idea of heaven, Sharm el Sheikh will tick all your boxes. But for thrill seekers Sharm isn’t just about those lazy days and this is a destination where it’s easy to find some adventure. The Sinai Peninsula offers natural attractions such as the Red Sea and of course the immense desert region. Both are a draw for the more active traveler.
Diving in the Red Sea
The Red Sea is one of the world’s best diving locations and Sharm el Sheikh enjoys several sites or has some nearby, such as Shark’s Bay and Ras Mohamed. The Blue Hole and ship wrecks such as the Dunraven and the Thistlegorm are popular diving locations. Diving schools will arrange excursions to some of this area’s best sites and lessons are available for beginners. Don’t miss the chance to dive at The Gardens just off Naama Bay or the spectacular 120 meter vertical drop known as the Tower.
Jeep in the desert
There are plenty of modes of transport if you’re looking to experience the Sinai Desert. You can take jeep tours or ride on the back of a camel but quad biking is perhaps the most exhilarating way to traverse this landscape. You can choose between a sunset or sunrise trip before going full throttle across the desert and mountain terrain. Most trips will feature a stop at a traditional Bedouin tent for refreshments and to clear the sand from your face.
Exploring the Colored Canyon
The Colored Canyon is hugely popular and on this trip you’ll find yourself traversing through other-worldly rock formations, some stretching up to 40 meters in height. The trek isn’t too taxing but the diverse range of colors that will blow your mind. This site is located around two hours from Sharm and is an off-road journey that proves to be something of an adventure in itself. If you do have the chance to opportunity to explore the canyons on your own in the early morning, do so when the crowds aren’t there: you’ll remember the experience for the rest of your days, with its size, formations and patterns in the rock.
Climbing at night
A trip that promises adventure but isn’t for the faint-hearted and will reward you with one of your most unforgettable sunsets is a climb to the top of Mount Sinai. An overnight trek to the 2,285 meter summit will mean you get to witness the sun rising over the mountainous terrain spread out in front of you. Of course, you’ll have to climb throughout the night and most people start this trip upwards from the foot of the mountain at 1am. The panoramic view along with the rising sun is, however, a memory that will last a lifetime.
These are just a few of the adventure activities awaiting you if you visit Sharm el Sheikh. There’s also the usual thrill-seeker sports such as paragliding, hot air ballooning and jet-skiing. But tick off at least one or two of these from your list for something more than just another day at the beach.
