Every traveler, no matter where they are from, must visit Europe one day. For some that might be a chance to see beautiful buildings, get in touch with culture, and admire nature’s beauty, but there are also many who come to Europe for its cuisine! Yes! As you might know, some of the best chefs come from Europe, and Italian and French cuisine are considered to be the best in the world as well.
Each country has something special to offer. For that reason, today let’s talk about five European delicacies that you must try when visiting the old continent. These dishes are not only unique and capture the spirit of various cultures, but are also delicious and worth every Euro!
Gelato
If you have been to Europe and didn’t taste gelato – you haven’t been in Europe at all! One of the most delicious, sweetest and refreshing desserts can be found in many European countries, but Italy, France, and Spain are the most famous for it. You can face a problem when trying to choose a flavor because there are literally hundreds of different tastes and you must try them all!
Palacinky
France is usually considered as being the best country when it comes to making crepes. However, central European Czech Republic has the so-called palacinky pancakes, which are definitely worth trying out. Palacinky is also a thin pancake just like a famous French crepe, but it is usually filled with traditional Czech jam, fruits and topped with sweet cream and sugar. So, it has a lot of similarities with crepes, but it also has something only Czechs can have, and this is why palacinky is worth trying out.
Pierogi
To be honest, pierogi aren’t big news for North Americans as they have been popular here for many years. Traditionally from Poland, they are baked in a pan with onions and butter. They might not be suitable for every traveler’s taste, but pierogi perfectly captures the spirit of Polish cuisine and is worth trying out.
Haggis
A traditional Scottish meal might not sound very appealing at first, but it is surely worth getting all your courage and tasting it. Why courage? Well, haggis is nothing else than a real sheep’s stomach filled with various other ingredients like smashed meat, liver, oatmeal, and spices. It is also served in the stomach in which it was cooked, so it won’t look like a dish you can get at a five-star restaurant. However, tasting haggis is one of those experiences you must have, especially if you get a chance to eat it from a professional Scottish cook.
Baklava
The last delicacy we firmly recommend is baklava. Crispy, wafer-thin layers of pastry, full of walnuts or roasted pistachios and topped with honey or sugar syrup – it is not only a dream-come-true for all who love desserts, but one of the must-eat meals when visiting Europe. Usually, baklava can be found in the southern and Mediterranean region of Europe, so you can and should definitely embrace an opportunity of tasting it if your next vacations are going to be somewhere in this area.
I bet that you are feeling pretty hungry now, aren’t you? In that case – start planning your European trip to taste every dish mentioned in this article.
