Koh Samui is everything you could want for a Thailand vacation. This destination has temples, beach parties, luxury resorts, and bars. With this 5-day itinerary, you’ll be able to experience most of the island highlights and have a memorable experience.
How to reach Koh Samui?
Koh Samui is the biggest of the three Gulf islands. The other two are Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. It is the only island in the gulf with an airport.
You can fly to Koh Samui directly from your home country. However, this might be a slightly more expensive option than others. Alternatively, you can fly to Bangkok and then take an overnight train to Surat Thani, followed by a ferry from Donsak Pier to Koh Samui. You can book the ferry through Seatran Ferry.
5-day Koh Samui itinerary
Day 1: Arrival, relaxation, and temple explorations
You have spent a lot of energy getting to Koh Samui. Therefore, let’s keep the first day breezy and relaxing.
Once you have checked into your hotel or resort, you can head to a nearby beach like Lamai Beach or Chaweng Beach. Sunbathe on the soft sand, relax by the turquoise water, or try your hand at water activities like paddle boarding or kayaking. Don’t forget to enjoy a refreshing drink or sumptuous lunch at a beachfront restaurant.
If you’ve had enough beach time, you can visit Wat Phra Yai for a dose of cultural immersion. This is an iconic landmark offering panoramic views of the island from its hilltop location.
In the evening, you can immerse yourself in the Fisherman’s Village in Bophut. Explore the vibrant streets lined up with shops selling souvenirs, local crafts, and clothing. Indulge in a delicious seafood feast at a beachfront restaurant or sample the delectable street food stalls.
Want to end your day on a high? Head to Soi Green Mango to turn on the party animal in you or Soi Reggae for karaoke until the thrilling techno scene kicks in.
Day 2: Ang Thong National Marine Park

Ang Thong National Marine Park is located about 20 kilometers west of Koh Samui. It is a captivating archipelago consisting of 42 limestone rock-strewn islands. The boulders are immersed in the turquoise waters, creating a natural beauty that many tourists describe as being the paradise of their dreams.
You can hike to see the hidden Emerald Lake from a distance. Other activities to be enjoyed are kayaking, snorkeling, or relaxing on a secluded beach.
Exploring Ang Thong National Marine Park is exhausting, and it will probably take the entire day.
However, if you still have energy left, put on your dancing shoes and head to Cha Cha Moon Beach Club to get a feel of the half-moon and full-moon parties. If you want to keep it chill, go to Lamai Central Plaza to enjoy mouth-watering dishes like meat, spring rolls, papaya salad, and satay barbecued seafood. You will also find a boxing ring here, and if you are lucky enough, you might be able to witness a match.
Day 3: Samui Aquarium and Tiger Garden
Located on the south side of Lamai Beach, Samui Aquarium and Tiger Park invite you to enjoy a wide variety of marine life, such as turtles, sharks, and other tropical fish. There’s also a tiger park right next to it where you will see many animals and beautiful birds. Don’t forget to attend the sea lion show at 13:30 and the tiger show at 14:30.
If time permits, you can visit Na Muang Safari Park. Here, you can participate in activities such as forest adventure, elephant riding, ATV four-wheel drive, watch monkey performances, and so on.
Day 4: Island hopping
When in Koh Samui, don’t miss out on a thrilling island-hopping adventure. Enjoy a day tour of Koh Tao with snorkeling and diving by hiring a speedboat. The underwater world is rich here.
Besides Koh Tao, you can explore the charming fishing village called Thong Krut or hire a local longtail boat and explore the nearby islands of Koh Mudsum and Koh Tan.
In the evening, you can enjoy a traditional Thai cooking class and learn the secrets of local Thai dishes like Green Curry or Pad Thai.
Day 5: Get a massage!
No Thailand trip is complete without a massage! After spending four exciting and exhausting days in Koh Samui, you have earned yourself a day of pampering. Before you have to leave this paradise, relax your sore muscles and your soul. If your resort offers spa and massage services, you can book an appointment with them. Otherwise, head to The Banyan Tree Spa (regarded as the gold standard in Thai massage).
So, here’s your 5-day Koh Samui itinerary. Of course, you are free to make changes to customize it as per your preferences. Whether you are seeking cultural immersion, relaxation, adventure, or crazy parties, Koh Samui won’t disappoint you.
