Lisbon Tram

Video: Riding Lisbon Tram 28

Lisbon Tram

There is something just cute about a tram. It’s like a tiny choo-choo train making its way into all the tight, hidden spaces of a city. Whatever you call it – trolley, streetcar, tram – they are efficient, less polluting than buses, and fun to ride on.

Lisbon Tram Tracks

Lisbon’s Tram system has been up and running since the 1870s. Happy yellow Tram number 28 is one of the best ways to see the sights of the city.  Hop on and it brings you up and down the hills through all the popular barrios like the Alfama and Chiado.  Sitting inside the trolley car itself, you feel like you’ve stepped back in time inside the wood-walled, car with open windows for ‘air-conditioning.’

Take a look at this quick video for your own guided tour on the 28!

We were in Lisbon only for a few hours. Unfortunately that meant not getting to ride this thing. I so wanted to, but we just didn’t make it. Really want to go back to Lisbon. Thanks for the video.

Hey Andrew! Thanks! The tram was a very cool (and cheap) way to see a larger part of the central city. Next time, right?

Loved everything about this ancient tram, one of Lisbon’s many highlights definitely. What was a nice surprise was that it rattles up and down a number of rather unpreposessing local streets (many filled with underwear shops for some reason!) but it ends at this the modern looking plaza with ace views of the city skyline and a load of nice fusion food and drink stalls. I think it was some sort of Asian pop up food event we just lucked upon, but was such a nice surprise to end the route there!

Thanks Jools! Yeah, I really liked the all-wood interior too. Just added to its charm.

I love trams/trolleys. What a ride down that steep narrow street!

They are great. If only it went super fast like my video does when I sped it up! 😉

Lisbon is an amazing place and one of Europe’s most underrated cities. Here’s to hoping more people find it!

I’d always heard good things about it. Now I just need to go back to see and experience more!
