How to Make Your Dream Vacation a Reality

You are here: Home / Guest Posts / How to Make Your Dream Vacation a Reality

//  by Guest Poster Leave a Comment

Have you been nodding off at work while thinking about a big vacation? For so many who work a 40-hour week, there’s a dream trip floating around in their imagination. The problem is that a large percentage of dreamers never take the action necessary to turn a concept into reality. The good news is that with a little planning, just about anyone can go on an exotic trip to the location of their choice.

There’s a two-part process that can increase a person’s likelihood of taking a major vacation in the near future. Part one is acquiring some or all of the necessary funds. The second part is making a detailed plan that includes shopping for significant discounts and bargains. It’s easy to forget that vacations and new cars have a lot in common in that if you want one, you need to figure out a way to pay, do a lot of research, and shop around for the best deals available. The following details can help you get underway with all the essential steps for turning daydreams into air or cruise tickets.

Get the Necessary Funds Together

saving money

Planning and paying are the two lynchpins of excellent vacationing. But paying is not just about forking over the money for transportation, lodging, and the rest. It’s about amassing as much capital as you can muster in order to take advantage of discounts. That’s one of the great secrets of being able to afford an otherwise pricey trip. That, and making a super-detailed plan. Applying for a personal loan is can be a way of dealing with trip finances. A loan gives you the leverage needed to pay well in advance for airfare, hotels, tour fees, connecting flights, etc.

See my ultimate financial and budgeting tips!

Plan Wisely

Preparing for a trip, especially preparing for post COVID travel, is going to require planning. Make a detailed written plan that includes your potential destinations, any events you hope to attend while traveling, a general budget, whether you want to take a companion along, and more. The plan is your blueprint for the entire journey, so don’t leave anything out.

Later, you’ll discover that you can use this document to help you pack efficiently. Don’t be surprised if the process of planning causes you to change your mind about where to go. Many do research and learn about exciting alternatives to their original vacation ideas.

Shop for Bargains

Shopping means hunting for bargains that are unrelated to prepayment. You might find that by joining a group excursion to Europe, Africa, or Asia, you can get airfare and accommodations for half the normal cost. Likewise, there are seasonal specials to countries like Thailand, Japan, the UK, and elsewhere that can reduce overall costs by a lot.

Be Safe

Turning an idea into reality means following safety tips without exception. Rule one for big trips is don’t announce plans on social media unless you want to become a magnet for thieves, scammers, and unsavory characters of all kinds. Rule two is don’t carry a lot of cash when traveling. Instead, prepay for all the big things and bring along a couple of universally accepted credit cards. Some businesses in big cities only take credit cards and don’t even take cash anymore. Whereas, some other smaller places ONLY take cash! Debit cards typically work at most ATMs around the world. Just be careful about debit card ‘skimmers’ and only get small amounts of cash.

Determine Your Group

Are you planning to turn this into a group activity with family and friends, or will you be heading out on a solo-travel adventure? Or maybe you want to meet these two options in the middle and go alone, within a group travel club. There are pros and cons of all styles of traveling so be sure to consider all the points. Certain locations are better for solo travelers than others, especially beginners. While other dream destinations dictate opportunities to create special core memories with family and/or friends.

Research Local Trends

Dinner at Clayton's Kitchen

One of the best ways to get the most out of a dream vacation is to act like a local once you make it to your destination. Especially if the place you have been fantasizing about visiting has a culture that is highly varied from that of your everyday life. Commit to immersing yourself in the local foods, entertainment, and ways of living. While there is nothing wrong with formal tours through museums or other points of interest, there is something to be said for experiencing a new place through the eyes of the people that know and live it daily.

Prepare Your Home

Make sure that you are planning in advance how your home will be looked after while you are away. This might include anything from having your pets watched to getting your snow shoveled, and everything in between. Depending on how long you will be gone for, you will want to make sure that your home is in good hands while you are away. Making these arrangements can not only minimize the potential for a break in while the house sits empty, but it can also significantly decrease any stress or worries that you have while you are away about the state of your home upon your return.
