5 of the Most Dangerous Tourist Destinations in the World

You are here: Home / World Travel / 5 of the Most Dangerous Tourist Destinations in the World

//  by Guest Poster Leave a Comment

You love adventures and traveling right? But are any “dangerous destinations” on your list? Of course it all depends on what you consider dangerous, right?

Anywhere can be considered dangerous because of not only crime, but steep terrain, extreme temperatures, civil strife, deadly diseases and more. Some may think of locations like Acapulco, Mexico or even Chicago, which are known for crime, but are also vibrant cities and huge tourist destinations.

Try to avoid places that are dangerous for crime. Instead visit the places like mountains, volcanoes, and unique areas with geysers and waterfalls. Some of them can feel a bit scary because they are proof of how strong nature can be.

MOUNT EVEREST, NEPAL

Driving through Nepal can be a unique experience because it has a lot to offer. If you want to drive your own vehicle you should do a bit of research when it comes to getting an international driving license Nepal. Also research the road conditions and best routes as this country may have less infrastructure than you are used to. After having a nice drive through the mountains, your last step would be Mount Everest.

If you are not an experienced climber, you shouldn’t even attempt to climb here. This is serious stuff and a large number of people don’t even make it out alive. Because this is at such a high altitude,  the air is “thinner” meaning there is a much lower level of oxygen.

But it’s also amazing just to look at Mt. Everest from a distance and there are some tours for everyone.

One of the most important tips is to maintain energy and hydrate yourself because your blood becomes much denser. Another thing to keep in mind is that a lot of people around the world want to climb mount Everest meaning that there will probably be a big crowd.

MOUNT WASHINGTON, USA

If you live in the United States, you may have not even heard of this mountain. Located in the White Mountain National Forest in the state of New Hampshire, Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeastern USA at 6,288 feet and is considered the most topographically prominent mountain east of the Mississippi River. Mount Washington is notorious for its erratic weather.

There are a lot of hiking destinations all over the United States that are considered dangerous, but this mountain is less popular which means that there are fewer tourists compared to other destinations. You can reach the base by car, but the most amazing views are at the top of course which is only approachable during certain periods of the year.

One of the biggest challenges you face up here is the wind. Climbing is hard even if the weather seems perfect, because there can be extremely dangerous 203 mph winds blowing your away. It still holds the Northern Hemisphere and Western Hemisphere record for directly measured surface wind speed, at 231 mph (372 km/h), recorded in 1934. The time of the year matters a lot because winter temps have reached −50 °F (−46 °C)!  No matter when you plan to go on this type of trip, you should always have a guide.

PRIPYAT, UKRAINE

chernobyl pripyat

Around four decades ago, Pripyat was a normal town in Russia. It’s a part of Ukraine now but everything changed in 1986. Everyone in the world was struck when they heard the news about the nuclear meltdown that happened in Chernobyl. The city Pripyat was the closest to it and therefore was most affected by the radiation.

Many years have passed since then, but radiation can last for thousands of years without declining. But still, there are many people who visit this area as a dangerous tourist attraction. Surprisingly, you can even find a few local older people still living there. It’s a sight to behold, a town frozen in time but also crumbling remains of buildings, homes, and even an amusement park.

HAWAI’I VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

Hawai’i is popular for its amazing beaches and nature.  There are also a lot of active volcanos that cause some concerns. Because of its location on a fault line, it is considered one of the most active locations in the world.

This national park is located on the island of Hawaii. The park encompasses two active volcanoes: Kīlauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, and Mauna Loa, the world’s most massive shield volcano. It can be very exciting to see some small eruptions of geysers, but it can also be dangerous. The problem isn’t just the lava but also the gases that are released into the air. This may not be dangerous to visit all the time but at a certain point, some bigger volcanos will erupt.

DEATH VALLEY, CALIFORNIA

California is well-known for its weather but some areas can get a bit too hot. Death Valley has areas where the temperature reaches 135 °F or 57 °C. There were a lot of people that didn’t think it is very dangerous and ended up getting hurt. It’s very important to stay safe and listen to your guide.

Besides being the hottest location on the planet, it also has a lot of rattlesnakes making it even more dangerous. Make sure you stay hydrated because even being close to the area will be extremely hot.
